#PolicyBulletin: LS passes Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill
The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill 2022, by means of a voice vote. It aims at repealing a British era law, The Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920.
It has led to controversy since it allows the collection, storage and analysis of physical and biological samples, including retina and iris scan of the convicted, arrested and detained persons.
The draft law also empowers the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to collect, store and preserve these records for 75 years and share it with other agencies.
However, defending the bill, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the bill will help improve the conviction rate and protect human rights of law abiding citizens.
