Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju will today be tabling the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill in the Parliament. The bill will aim at bringing electoral reforms.
The bill seeks to allow electoral registration officers to ask for the Aadhaar number of people who want to register as voters "for the purpose of establishing the identity".
It also aims to empower the officers to ask for Aadhar numbers of those persons who are already registered as voters, for the purposes of authentication.
Further, till now only January 1 was considered as the qualifying date to register as voters. People who turn 18 on or before January 1 can register as voters. Those turning 18 after that have to wait for one whole year to register as voters.
However, now an amendment will consider four qualifying dates for eligible people to register as voters.
Another amendment to the act will allow the elections to become gender neutral for service voters.
