Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union passes away

  • What: The 91-year-old Mikhail Gorbachev, the former head of the Soviet Union who peacefully ended the Cold War, has passed away. He had been in and out of the hospital and his health had been deteriorating. His cause of death has not been made public, however, the hospital has stated that he had a serious and prolonged illness.

  • His Legacy: In 1985, Mr Gorbachev was appointed general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party and de facto leader of the nation. He enacted reforms and opened the Soviet Union to the outside world. However, he was powerless to stop the union's steady demise, and many Russians held him responsible for the years of unrest that followed.

  • World Leaders’ Statements:With "deepest condolences," President Vladimir Putin expressed how Mr Gorbachev had "a profound impact on the course of history."

  • US President Joe Biden described Mr Gorbachev as a "rare leader" and praised him for being a special politician.

  • UK PM, Boris Johnson, expressed admiration for Mr Gorbachev's integrity and courage
