'Govt not in favour of ending WhatsApp's encryption': IT Minister

  • In an interview on Friday, Union Information Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad stated that India is not the only country that is seeking to collect only 'limited' data from end-to-end encryption social media platforms like WhatsApp.

  • He further stated that such restricted data collection would help in detecting and further, preventing crime.

  • This statement came in response to WhatsApp challenging the Government's move stating that this end-to-end encryption ensures freedom of speech and expression for citizens, without any fear.

  • Minister said that the government respects the privacy of it's citizens and will follow the guidelines of the Supreme Court on the same .
