Govt announces new rules for social media; All you need to know

The Government on Thursday announced new rules regarding regulation of digital content, which features a Code of Ethics and a three-tier grievance redressal system for news sites and OTT platforms.

The Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 prescribes how digital news platforms, social media and OTT platforms will be regulated by the government.

It states that social media companies will be required to appoint Indian-based compliance officers. These people will have to inform the users the reason behind removal of their posts and hear them out.

Additionally, social media sites will also have to disclose "first originator" of any mischievous message.

Digital news platforms will have to comply With the rules laid down by the Press Council of India. New websites will have to register at the site of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
