"Government treating OCIs as 2nd class citizens", OCI to SC

· On Tuesday eight overseas citizens of India (OCIs) have asked the supreme court on the issue of the central government treating the overseas citizens as second class citizens.

· The OCIs appealed to the Apex court to grant them the same right of freedom of speech and expression as the other Indian citizens enjoyed.

They stated in the petition "The OCI fears the losing of OCI status while living in India because of arbitrary power conferred on the government to cancel their status under section 7D of the citizenship act".

· Many of the petitioners claimed "the OCIs are resisted from meaningfully participating in their professional streams in India. Those OCIs who pay the taxes and reside in India don't have the right to freely express their views about the local government or have no right to voice their grievances".
