Government set to regulate online gaming

  • On Friday, the government of India was urged to regulate online gaming by the BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi. Modi urged that the platforms should be controlled through taxation.

  • Modi also told Rajya Sabha that gaming is a significant source of addiction for many youngsters.

  • Online gaming increased by more than four and a half hours, an 11 per cent rise since the pre-covid period. India saw the most many downloads of causal mobile gaming in India, succeeding China in 2020.

  • States like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala previously banned online gaming, which the court struck down such a provision.

  • Many investors since the onset of the pandemic have invested in ‘real world gaming’. Gaming sites like Dream 11 earned a profit of Rs 180 crore for FY2020.
