G7 mounts pressure on Ethiopian leaders

  • In a major statement Group of seven (G7) comprising of leading nations of the world, called for swift” withdrawal of Eritrean troops from Ethiopia’s conflict-hit northern Tigray region, as the International Crisis Group (ICG) warned of a prolonged deadlock.

  • Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had stated that the army would leave the region. This he had stated last week, three days after he formally recognised military presence in Tigray region.

  • Addis Ababa and Asmara had previously long denied Eritreans were active in Tigray at all. However Tigray leader’s state that the withdrawal process would take a long time.

  • Pro-TPLF fighters have regrouped under the Tigray Defence Forces and the numbers are swelling due to increased disenchantment against the atrocities of military.
