Former French president gets convicted for corruption

  • On Monday, the judges found President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of trying to bribe a judge and influence peddling. The judges pronounced a 3-year mail term and two years suspension for the Mr.Sarkozy.

  • Sarkozy was country’s president from 2007 to 2012. He is the second French president after late Jacques Chirac to be convicted of corruption. However he has denied any wrongdoings.

  • Prosecutors pleaded before the judges that Sarkozy had offered to secure a plum job in Monaco for judge Gilbert Azibert. This he had done in return for confidential information about an inquiry into allegations that he had accepted illegal payments from L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt for his 2007 presidential campaign.

  • Notably Sarkozy has only ten days to appeal against the ruling.
