First ever Mahapanchayat to be held in Punjab today

  • On Thursday a Mahapanchayat will be held in Punjab by the farmers protesting the agricultural laws at Jagraon in Ludhiana district.

  • A total of 31 farmer unions and around one lakh people will be attending the event and listening to speeches by farm leaders such as Dr. Darshan Pal of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha.

  • The arrangements for the gathering were made at the New Grain Market in Jagraon where a massive stage is being set up. The number of police personnel has also increased to avoid any unfortunate or untoward incident.

  • After Haryana and Uttar Pradesh this will be the first Mahapanchayat to be held in Punjab since the protests began, which has been led largely by farmers belonging to Punjab, against the farm laws announced by the Centre in November last year.

  • Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra whose party is in power in Punjab has been supporting the protest since it began and even attended a Mahapanchayat in Saharanpur district.

  • “They (the centre) calls farmers anti-national, but in reality, it is them who are anti-national.” Stated Ms Gandhi Vadra.
