The Delimitation Commission has proposed an increase in the number of seats for Jammu to 43 and for Kashmir to 47. Nine seats have been proposed for STs and seven for SCs in Jammu and Kashmir.
The government set up the Delimitation Commission on March 6, 2020, after the abrogation of Article 370- which accorded the region with a special status. It is headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai.
Former J&K CM Omar Abdullah opposed the recommendation of the commission and stated "The draft recommendation of the J&K delimitation commission is unacceptable. The distribution of newly created assembly constituencies with 6 going to Jammu & only 1 to Kashmir is not justified by the data of the 2011 census."
