Facebook and Twitter to be banned in India? Read full details
Major social media platforms- Facebook, Instagram, Twitter might end up being banned in India if they don't meet the new Intermediary Guidelines set by the Government.
The deadline for fulfilling these guidelines was set at May 25. However, none of these major social platforms have complied with the guidelines as of now.
In February 2021, the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEITy) had given a bracket of three months to the social media platforms to meet these guidelines.
If these platforms dont comply then they will lose their status as intermediaries and criminal action can be taken against them. However, the US based companies have asked for a timeline of six months so as to get a response from their US headquarters.
According to the new rules, the social media platforms will have to appoint compliance officers from India. This appointed officer will monitor content and remove if it is objectionable.
