• Major social media platforms- Facebook, Instagram, Twitter might end up being banned in India if they don't meet the new Intermediary Guidelines set by the Government.

• The deadline for fulfilling these guidelines was set at May 25. However, none of these major social platforms have complied with the guidelines as of now.

• In February 2021, the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEITy) had given a bracket of three months to the social media platforms to meet these guidelines.

• If these platforms dont comply then they will lose their status as intermediaries and criminal action can be taken against them. However, the US based companies have asked for a timeline of six months so as to get a response from their US headquarters.

• According to the new rules, the social media platforms will have to appoint compliance officers from India. This appointed officer will monitor content and remove if it is objectionable.
