The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to return to power in the northeastern state of Manipur. The party had won 29 seats in the state, and was leading in another three seats till 8:30 pm on March 10.
If the party wins just two more seats, it will be the first time that BJP makes the government in the state, without any outside support.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh defeated his nearest Congress rival, P Saratchandra Singh, by 18,271 votes in the Heingang seat.
The BJP had won 21 seats in the previous 2017 elections. It had still managed to form the government in coalition with regional parties NPP and NPF.
