EC says that BJP Covid-19 vaccine poll promises; not a poll violation

  • The Election Commission of India said that the free Covid-19 vaccine promise made by the BJP in their manifesto for Bihar elections is not a violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

  • This was in response to complaint filed by activist Saket Gokhale, who sought action under the MCC.

  • The EC responded that the state election manifestos should not contain anything repugnant to the Constitution, avoid making promises that vitiate the purity of electoral process or exert undue influence on the voter.

  • Gokhale, on the other hand, had alleged that the promise was discriminatory and misleading as India’s vaccine policy hasn‘t been announced yet.
