Don’t blindly follow West in criminalising marital rape: Govt

  • The Centre today told the Delhi High Court that just because most western countries criminalise marital rape that India should also blindly follow them in such an endeavour.

  • The Centre wrote a response in opposition to PILs seeking to criminalise marital rape in the country, “India has its own unique problems due to various factors like literacy, lack of financial empowerment of the majority of females, mindset of the society, vast diversity, poverty, etc. and these should be considered carefully before criminalising marital rape”.

  • The Centre further said that given the vast diversity in the country, it is necessary to take opinions of state governments to avoid confusion later.

  • The Centre further said the criminalising it will lead to multiple false cases and that the matter was a family issue not to be deliberated over by courts.
