Delhi Court allows Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, other accused to access soft copy of chargesheet

  • On Tuesday, a Delhi Court ordered that a soft copy of the charges filed by the Delhi Police in the 2020 Delhi riot cases under the Illegal Activities (Prevention) Act be issued to all convicted people in custody (State vs Tahir Hussain).

  • Following an appeal filed by the accused, Umar Khalid, the order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat.

  • Without regard to the position that the prosecution should supply the accused with a hard copy of the chargesheet, Khalid prayed for access in prison to the soft copy of the same.

  • Khalid, who was present from jail by video conference, advised the court that the charge sheet was unavailable in violation of his right to a fair trial.
