Delhi and Rajasthan to face power crisis?

  • The state of Rajasthan and National Capital of Delhi can potentially face a power crisis due to the worrying nationwide coal shortage.

  • Rajasthan has already declared that it will schedule one-hour power cuts. With this, Rajasthan became the first state to officially declare that it make the cuts in 10 major cities.

  • Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday wrote to PM Modi seeking his intervention in the coal crisis that has hit the country.

  • This came hours after power discom Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) CEO Ganesh Srinivasan said that Delhi might go through intermittent rotational load shedding due to the crisis.

The federal grid operator’s data has stated that over half of India's 135 coal-fired power plants, which in total supply around 70% of the country's electricity, have fuel stocks of less than three days.
