"COVID-19 new variant found in India is 'Delta'; WHO


  • On Monday WHO (World Health Organisation) labelled a name for COVID-19 new variant found in India is called the 'Delta' variant.

  • The new COVID-19 strain found in India is called B.1.617.2 and the new Coronavirus strain found in the United Kingdom is called the 'Alpha' variant.

  • According to the scientific nomenclature the new COVID-19 variants are labelled and also they are named after the countries where these variants were first found.

  • However, there are four new variants also known as 'variants of Concern' (VOC). They are identified as B.1.1.7, B.1.351, P2 and B.1.617.2 also the public names given to these strains are as per the nation's where these were found first: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta & Kappa.
