Court rejects Sharjeel Imam's bail plea in anti-CAA Protest matter, Read More

  • On Friday, a city court refused JNU student Sharjeel Imam's bail application, stating that the tone and tenor of incendiary discourse have a damaging effect on public quiet, peace, and harmony.

  • During the anti-CAA protests in New Friends Colony in December 2019, Imam was arrested for allegedly giving a seditious speech that culminated in violence.

  • The evidence in favour of the claims that rioters were encouraged by Imam's speech to engage in rioting, attacking police, and other acts in multiple locations was "scarce and vague," according to the court. Imam gave offensive speeches on December 13 and 15, 2019 and January 16, 2020, according to the prosecution.
