• What: In a major development the Union government has stated that it intends to release prisoners with good conduct earlier than the completion of their term of imprisonment

• Why: This is being done in lieu of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav which is being celebrated across the nation to mark 75 years of India's independence. Further, the Union Home Ministry has set a number of conditions based on which the convicts will be released from prison

• What next: Further the Union Home Ministry has stated that the foreign national convicts can only be released after due recommendation by the Ministry of external affairs (MEA). State-level recommendation committee will also be set up to assess and review the candidature of the convicts to be released
