Congress makes bold claim ahead of next year's Uttarakhand elections

  • In the run-up to next year's assembly elections in Uttarakhand, the Congress promised on Monday to make Gairsain the state's permanent capital "within two-three years" of taking power. "Within two-three years of coming to power, we will first build the infrastructure required for a permanent capital in Gairsain and then relocate the state's capital there," Congress general secretary and former chief minister Harish Rawat said at a press conference here.

  • Rawat also charged the state administration with doing little to help Gairsain develop.

  • "We would like to ask the BJP government what it did in the last five years for infrastructure development in Gairsain. Where did the amount of Rs 57 crore sanctioned for the secretariat building and residential houses go?" - Harish Rawat
