Chinese Military Ship in Colombo, India Alleges a Spy Ship

  • What: Chinese military survey ship Yuan Wang 5 arrived at Hambantota port in Sri Lanka. The Ship was permitted to dock at the port for six days for refuelling and gathering other supplies after intense negotiation, an official said.

  • Sri Lanka’s Statement: “there have been ships from the US, India, and other countries. We have allowed these ships in the same way we have allowed Chinese ships to dock,” a Sri Lankan minister said.

  • India’s Take on the Issue: India had raised concerns that it may indeed be a spy ship that will pose a threat to the safety and security of the nation.

  • China’s Statement: Chinese Foreign Ministry has claimed that the activities of the vessels would not harm the security of any country. “Beijing Yuan Wang 5 has successfully berthed with active cooperation from the Sri Lankan side,” the officials said.
