Chinese companies not allowed to conduct 5G trials in India

  • As India moves to another level of technology by giving clearance for 5G trials concerns have raised over the denial to Chinese companies to participate in the process.

  • Indian government has mandated MTNL, Airtel, Jio , VI ( Vodafone Idea) to conduct the trials as of now. Notably it has refused permission to Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE to conduct 5G trials.

  • The DoT last week approved applications of telecom companies Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and MTNL to conduct 5G trials but none of them will be using technologies of Chinese entities. The trials will be conducted over a period of 6-months

US State Department officials have said that India is in its sovereign right to decide on 5G trials. Notably US had designated Chinese tech giant Huawei and ZTE as “national security threat” last year.
