China to donate 1 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine to Nepal

• On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping had announced that China will be donating one million doses of Covid-19 vaccines to Nepal.

• Nepal is said to be facing a shortage of vaccines and is unable to provide second shots to more than one million people.

• Nepal’s foreign ministry informed that the provision of vaccines was announced as grant assistance by Chinese President on a phone conversation with Nepal’s President.

• Nepal is currently going through its second wave of the coronavirus.

• According to the statement given by Nepal’s foreign ministry, President Xi acknowledged the difficulties Nepal has been facing due to the second wave of the pandemic and expressed his government’s full support for the fight against Covid-19.

• Under a commercial contract between Nepal and Serum Institute of India earlier this year, two million doses of Covishield are to be supplied. So far, SII has supplied one million doses.

• Nepal had also received a grant assistance of 1.1 million doses of Covishield from India in January and March.

• Nepal government had recently been informed by COVAX facility that further supplies of vaccination from the facility will be unlikely before next year.
