The Election Commission on Monday announced a change in the election date of Punjab assembly elections. Instead of the previous date of 14 February, Punjab will now vote on 20 February.
This change has been done after political parties requested the Election Commission to take into consideration celebrations on account of Guru Ravidas Jayanti.
Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi in a letter to the EC had suggested the assembly polls should be deferred by at least six days after representatives of the Scheduled Castes community, told him that a large number of people from the community would visit Varanasi from February 10 to 16 and so may not be able to vote. Guru Ravidas Jayanti is on February 16.
