Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that the government will be providing free 5kgs of foodgrains to 80 crore poor families for the next two months (May and June).
In giving out 5kgs of foodgrains to the designated poor families, the government will be spending more than 26,000 crore rupees on the program.
While announcing the programme, PM Modi said that it is important that the poor get nutritional support as India battles through the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
This scheme known as the PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana was first announced last year in March during the nationwide lockdown for about three months. It was later extended till November.
