Centre issues 'one last notice' to Twitter

  • The Centre on Saturday issued a 'last warning' to Twitter to appoint Indian officers, as per the country's new IT rules. Failing which, the Government has stated there will be consequences as per the IT rules and the penal code for the coompany.

  • “Twitter Inc. is hereby given one last notice to immediately comply with the Rules, failing which the exemption from liability available under section 79 of the IT Act, 2000 shall stand withdrawn and Twitter shall be liable for consequences as per the IT Act and other penal laws of India.” stated Rakesh Maheshwari's letter who is the Group Coordinator of Cyber Law.

  • Section 79 provides the social media intermediaries or the platforms protection/exemption from legal prosecution, for the content posted on their platforms.

  • This move also comes after Twitter today briefly removed the 'blue/verified tick' from Vice President Venkiah Naidu's personal twitter profile. The blue tick was also removed for RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and others.
