Cabinet clears proposal regarding marrying age of women. Read all details

  • Government sources have stated that the Union Cabinet has cleared the proposal for increasing the marrying age of women from 18 years to 21 years- a year after the proposal was in talks.

  • PM Modi had mentioned about the proposal in his Independence Day speech last year. He had stated, "This government is constantly concerned about the health of daughters and sisters. To save the daughters from malnutrition, it is necessary that they're married at the right age."

  • Presently, the minimum legal age to get married for men is 21 years but for women it is 18 years.

  • The government is eyeing changes to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act, and the Hindu Marriage Act to bring the plan into action.
