What: US House of Representatives Speaker and top US lawmaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday landed in Taiwan, marking a major move against China.
Pelosi's statement: Pelosi spoke to Taiwanese lawmakers and said in a press meeting that the US supports the status quo, but does not want anything to happen to Taiwan by force. In a landmark statement, she said “Now, more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is crucial, that’s the message we bring in today.”
China's response: In response to the visit, China summoned the American envoy to lodge a protest. It stated that 'Washington will pay a price for its mistakes'. China also blocked imports of citrus, fish and other foods from Taiwan in retaliation for a visit by a top American lawmaker
