The Election Commission of India suspended four of its officials, deputed in Assam's Karimganj, after they were found carrying an EVM in a vehicle that belonged to BJP's MLA Krishnendu Paul.
The EC has also ordered a repolling in the consitutency and it is likely that a FIR will also be filed in the case. This came a day after locals found the poll officials travelling in the MLAs car.
The preliminary report submitted by the District Election Officer stated that the polling party was 'unaware' that vehicle belonged to the BJP MLA. They were simply transporting the EVMs to the strong room.
Referring to the incident, Congress' Priyanka Gandhi tweeted that the EC should act decisively on such complaints and that a serious revaluation of the use of EVMs in elections needs to be carried out at a national level by all parties.
