BJP Cites Recent Electoral Wins to Deny 'Political Motive' Behind Farm Laws Rollback

  • The withdrawal of the three farm bills has been characterised by the opposition as a political move by the Narendra Modi government ahead of state elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, but BJP and government sources insist that this is not the case, citing multiple election victories for the party since the bills were passed 14 months ago.

  • A party official noted the party's victories in Assam, a mainly rural state, Puducherry, and a strong showing in West Bengal polls as indication that the party had fared well during the farmer movement.

  • The BJP has also won bypolls and other local elections such as civic polls, Zila Parishad, and Autonomous councils, according to the functionary.

  • The BJP won all six municipal corporations in Gujarat, outperforming its 2015 performance, as well as the Gujarat civic and panchayat elections, the Uttar Pradesh Zila Panchayat elections, and the recent assembly bypolls in Assam, Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh.
