Belarus Protests intensifies as large number of people take to the streets

  • The anti-government protests in Belarus intensified against incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko. The Belarusian President has faced severe criticism from the citizens for his open comments against women, by labelling them as “too weak for politics “ and being only good at household chores.

  • The collapse began way before the August 9 presidential elections in which Lukashenko claimed landslide victory, thus setting off two months of continuous anti-government protests.

  • A unique factor about the elections was that, Lukashenko faced a strong competition from opppsition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, a wife of a popular blogger who himself desired to contest but was imprisoned before he could register for the elections.

  • Mr. Lukashenko had mocked the opposition candidate as meek mother who is only good at making cutlets.
