[Bangalore Riots] Karnataka HC directs police to arrest former Mayor Sampath Raj

  • On 13 November, the Karnataka High Court ordered the police to take all practicable measures to track and arrest Sampath Raj, the former mayor of the district, in connection with the Bangalore riots that took place on 11 August.

  • This direction was passed by the Division Bench of Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Vishwajith Shetty after it was told that Raj, against whom a non-bailable warrant was given, is on the run.

  • The court further ordered the investigation officer to file a report outlining the measures taken to locate the accused in a sealed envelope by the next date of the hearing.

  • The court is hearing requests from the National Investigating Agency or some other Central Investigation Agency demanding the transfer of the inquiry into the incident.

  • Two problems related to the riots were transferred to the National Investigating Agency (NIA) at an earlier hearing.
