Ban on cow slaughter and beef products in Lakshadweep proposed by Centre

• In the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, the Central government is considering a full ban on the slaughter of cows, calves, bulls, and bullocks, with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if the prohibition is violated.

• The proposed legislation also aims to restrict the selling, storing or transport of beef or beef items in any manner.

• To that end, the draft of the Lakshadweep Animal Protection Law, 2021 has been made public and is open to public consultation.

• Comments must be submitted by March 28, 2021, at the latest.

• Both pigs, calves (male and female), bulls, and bullocks are forbidden from being slaughtered under the new regulations.
