AUSUK Pact explained in 1-minute

  • Australia, United Kingdom, and the United States signed a tripartite pact in order to counter China and address the growing regional security concerns

  • The pact received backlash from the French, who said that they have been backstabbed. France has now lost a contact to build 12 submarines with Australia

  • It is for the first time in 50 years that the US is sharing the submarine technology and will allow Australia to build nuclear submarines, making it only the seventh country in the world to operate a nuclear submarine

  • For India, it is neither good news nor bad news since it will further the prospects of balancing China's growing naval power in the Indo-Pacific region without being involved directly

  • Notably, New Zealand has stated that it will not allow Australian Nuclear submarine to operate in its waters
