Check out why is Northeast prone to earthquakes

  • As India battles the second wave of Coronavirus, another challenge came at the hands of the government as it will have to respond to a devastating earthquake in Assam.

  • The Earthquake measured 6.4 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake originated in Tezpur of Assam and tremors were felt even in North Bengal and other parts of the Northeast.

  • Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal said, "Big earthquake hits Assam. I pray for the well-being of all and urge everyone to stay alert. Taking updates from all districts."

  • PM Modi also spoke to Assam CM in order to take stock of the situation. Moreover North East Region of India is a earthquake prone area due to the frequent Tectonic activity between the Indian and Eurasian Plates in the north and subduction tectonics along the Indo-Myanmar range (IMR) in the east.
