Assam creates youth team to control population in Muslim majority areas

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday stated that the state is building up teams of youth to create awareness on measures to control population and for supplying contraceptives.

  • CM Sarma termed massive population growth as the root cause of growing economic disparities and poverty among the minority Muslim community,

  • Speaking in the state assembly, he announced that 1,000 youth are being enrolled from the lower Assam to control what he termed as 'population explosion'. Along with this, the state will also form a separate team of ASHA workers for the same purpose.

  • He also compared the birth rates of the two major communities of the state. He stated that the the population growth rate for Hindus between 2001-11 was 10%, while that of Muslims was 29%
