ASEAN decision gives setback to China's vaccine diplomacy

  • In a major setback to China's efforts for it's vaccine diplomacy, three ASEAN nations- Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia on Friday signed agreements and deals with the US and the UK for the covid-19 vaccines.

  • This comes despite the fact that a lot of Chinese officials, including Premier Li Keqiang to the ASEAN region, have paid visits to different ASEAN nations to assure them that they would get priority in the vaccine delivery.

  • Philippines on Friday secured millions of doses of the Covaxin, developed in the UK collectively by AstraZenca and Oxford. Thailand too has signed a deal for 26million vaccines with the United Kingdom. Malaysia has signed a deal with the US Pharma giant Pfizer, to secure vaccines for 20% of it's population.
