Area Demolished after Jahangirpuri Riots: What is the SC Ruling?

  • The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the North Delhi Municipal Corporation's demolition drive against accused encroachers in the Jahangirpuri neighbourhood, which was the scene of communal rioting last week.

  • On a remark made by Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave, a court led by the Chief Justice of India ordered the status quo.

  • The petition was submitted by the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, an organization of Islamic clerics, to stop the demolition of the NDMC.

  • The plea asks for a determination that the accused's properties cannot be demolished as a punitive measure because such a penalty does not exist under criminal law.
