Area Demolished after Jahangirpuri Riots: What is the SC Ruling?
The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the North Delhi Municipal Corporation's demolition drive against accused encroachers in the Jahangirpuri neighbourhood, which was the scene of communal rioting last week.
On a remark made by Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave, a court led by the Chief Justice of India ordered the status quo.
The petition was submitted by the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, an organization of Islamic clerics, to stop the demolition of the NDMC.
The plea asks for a determination that the accused's properties cannot be demolished as a punitive measure because such a penalty does not exist under criminal law.
