What: After massive protests against Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapakasa, the Speaker announced that he will be resigning on Wednesday.
Why: The announcement came shortly after large groups of protestors broke into the private residence of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and set it on fire.
Prime Minister's statement: "To ensure the continuation of the Government including the safety of all citizens I accept the best recommendation of the Party Leaders today, to make way for an All-Party Government. To facilitate this I will resign as Prime Minister."
President: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his official residence shortly before protesters overran the compound and stormed his nearby office.
What next: The Speaker will function as the President for the next 30 days during which the Parliament will elect a new leader.
