Agnipath scheme protests: All updates

  • What: A police station in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh was torched and the homes of senior BJP figures in Bihar, including deputy chief minister Renu Devi, were attacked. Police in UP fired tear gas at protesters and public buses were attacked. Protests also erupted in Haryana , where internet services have been shut down.

  • Why: These protests are occurring in different states of India in response to the newly introduced Agnipath scheme by the government, where people between 17.5-21 years will be recruited in the Army for a period of four years.

  • Response: The government defended its scheme by stating that agniveers will get financial aid after their 4 year service. In Karnataka, Home minister Araga Jnanendra said that the government will induct ‘Agniveers’ into state police after completion of their service. Bihar deputy CMs Tarkishore Prasad and Renu Devi get ‘Y’ category security cover after attacks over ‘Agnipath’ recruitment scheme.
