Activist Varavara Rao to be shifted to Nanavati Hospital

  • In a response to a plea by activist-poet Varavara Rao's wife, the Bombay High Court today ordered that Rao should be shifted to the Nanavati Hospital, for a period of 15 days.

  • The 80 year old activist, was lodged in Navi Mumbai's Tajola jail since 2018, for his involvement in the Bhima Koregaon violence case. He has been charged with the anti-terror law, UAPA.

  • Arguing on his behalf, senior lawyer Indra Jaisingh stated that he had sustained head injuries at the JJ Hospital, where he had been admitted earlier. He had also tested positive for coronavirus over there, but there has been no one to take care for him.

  • Since he was completely bed-ridden, he needed constant care, which was not being provided to Mr.Rao in the JJ Hospital. Following these facts, the Bombay HC decided to allow for his medical examination in the Nanavati hospital.
