Abu-Dabi moves towards secularisation?

  • In a major move to aid efforts to attract foreign investment and prospects of long term residency, Abu Dabi is all set to move towards efforts of secularisation

  • Non-Muslims will be allowed to marry, divorce and get joint child custody under civil law in Abu Dhabi according to a new decree issued of its law

  • A new court to handle Non-Muslim matters will be set up and will operate both in Arabic and English

  • The UAE last year introduced a number of legal changes at the federal level, including decriminalising premarital sexual relations and alcohol consumption, and cancelling provisions for leniency when dealing with so-called “honour killings”.
