About the very first animal-to-human heart transplant in human history

• A 57-year-old American citizen received the first of its kind transplant surgery, involving a genetically modified pig heart • In an effort to save the patient‘s life, the doctors transplanted a pig heart.

• According to the doctors the man is doing very well days after the highly experimental surgery. • Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Centre states that this transplant shows that a heart from a genetically modified animal can function in the human body without any immediate rejection.

• The patient David Bennett was aware that there was no guarantee of him making out of the operation theatre alive but he was dying slowly, ineligible for a human heart transplant and was left with no other option but to go ahead with the experimental surgery.
