5 Lakhs fine imposed on Mamata Bannerjee by Calcutta HC for putting the judiciary in 'bad light'

  • The High Court of Calcutta fined West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Rs 5 lakhs on Wednesday for disrespecting the judiciary.

  • The decision was issued by a single bench of the Calcutta High Court led by Justice Kausik Chanda while hearing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's election suit contesting BJP politician Suvendu Adhikari's win in the Nandigram Constituency in the recent state assembly elections.

  • Justice Chanda first refused to drop the case, but subsequently changed his mind and stated that he was recused from the matter.

  • Mamata Banerjee has also filed a motion to have the judge in the case replaced, claiming that Justice Chanda has ties to the BJP.
