22 farmer unions, of the total 32 unions in Punjab today came together to set up a political party that is expected to contest all 117 seats in the February-March Punjab Assembly election.
The leaders have termed it as Samyukt Samaj Morcha and maintain that this is a morcha/ movement and not just a political party.
The leaders asserted that the common people, from villages and cities will be part of the forum.
The SKM said it identified itself as a "platform of more than 400 different ideological organisations" and, in the light of lack of consensus amongst those organisations, it would not contest polls.
